Light On the Sound

  1. LIGHT ON THE SOUND - An acrylic painting on a 16 x 20 size canvas board. It appears on the cover of, "Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, Aug.1980".

    Some of the things I have to consider when designing a magazine cover is the size and placement of the magazine's title, and any story titles, author's names, and any blurbs that may be placed over my painting. I am free to use whatever colors I want, it's up to the art editor to select the colors for all the lettering that will be overlaid on my painting.

    Shortly after I sent this painting to the publisher I received a phone call from the art editor. He said he was going to send the painting back to me, he had a color in mind for the magazine title that would not match well with the colors at the top of my painting. He asked if I minded changing the sky color to a dark bluish hue . . .

    I composed myself, and as politely as I could manage, I told him that his request was unreasonable. I asked him, "which makes more sense to you;
    that you go through the trouble, expense, and loss of time to mail the painting back to me, making me spend an entire day re-painting the sky and mailing it back to you, OR, that you take just a minute or two to select another color for the lettering, which does not involve any work or expense on anyone's part, and no loss of time?

    He paused, then answered, "OK, I'll select another color, this time. Next time you use the colors I want, I'm the art editor, OK?" And I responded with, "Of course!, just let me know what colors you want before I start the painting, OK?" And he said, "of course!" And I said "OK!" and he said "OK!" And that was how the phone call ended, and that was how my association with this magazine ended.
